THE PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE TRAWLER "MS LILIA"
Mid 2003 saw the beginning of the planning of the boat with construction commencing in early 2004 and continueing until late December 2006 at the estaleiro Maccarini (boatyard) in the city of Navegantes in the Southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. Navegantes is a traditional boat building center with any number of yards, with Maccarini acknowledged to be one of the most accomplished if not the finest in the area. Wood boat building is what they do and have done for hundreds of years, and Ipe is considered the finest wood available anywhere in the world for this purpose. Ipe
is so esteemed as a boat building wood that Maccarini refuses to build with any other material.
The years of 2004,05, & 06 saw steady progress on construction with our intimate involvement via the internet from the United States and through regular trips to Navegantes to see progress first hand. While construction was taking place the builder made pictures of every phase of it and sent them to us weekly. As a result, we have a complete pictorial documentation of the construction. These clearly show the care and craftmanship that went into it's building. These records and pictures will be available to whomever buys her.
The name of the boat was selected in honor of my wife's sister Lilia who lived her life in the service of others, opening her home to all comers in need of home and hearth away from their own. It was and is our desire that the barco "MS LILIA" should do no less and pay tribute to the kind of life she lived.

THE STORY OF IPE (BRAZILIAN WALNUT) WOOD
Ipe is a tropical hardwood of the specie Tabebuia Bignoniaceae and variously known as Brazilian walnut, iron wood, everwood, simply madeira locally and Ipe Rosa among other names. It grows in Central America, The Southern Caribean, and the Amazon basin of South America. It is not particularly rare nor endangered. It is just about the perfect wood for boat building, having qualities that make for strong and durable craft. Vessels built from it are sometimes called "forever Boats" by local sailors and seamen.
Ipe's statistics are quite impressive and almost unbelievable but true as documented by no less an authority than the U S Forestry Service
and others:
*Density : Around 1 or better and in most cases will not float in salt
water
*Hardness: 3,650 as measured on the scale or approximately
3 times as hard as American Oak and 5 to 6 times as hard as teak
*Strength : as compared to teak, Bending Shear hardness
Ipe: 25,400 2,060 3,680
Teak: 14,600 1,890 690
*Fire rating: A-1, the same as concrete and steel
*Resistance to rot & insect damage: Naturally resistant to decay,
fungi, termites & other wood destroying insects, and with a rated
service life of minimun 25 years up to 100 years.
*Density: Around 1 and weighing 69/70 Lbs per Cu. Ft. versus that of
teak at 38 to 40 Lbs per Cu Ft
*Modulus elongation: Ipe 3,140,000 Vs Teak @ 1,550,000
*Desireable characteristics: the wood is dimensionally stable and
in the heartwood boat building grades completely free of knots or
other deformities. It finishes to a rich walnut brown color and resist
all but the most severe impact damage, including spike heels and
dropped tools.
